I Speak Shannon

Since she started speaking, my daughter, Shannon, has sometimes had her own way of saying things. Sometimes an incorrectly pronounced word, an incorrectly emphasized word or sometimes a word she made up totally on her own! This blog is about those words and phrases and I encourage any of you who know Shannon to also add anything that comes to mind or just ask question if you don't understand something that she's said, because, for the last 21 years, I've been able TO SPEAK SHANNON!

Don't forget that if by age 33 you and I don't find love we're getting married, getting a surrogate, and moving out of the country. Hope you have a super fun Bday and If you puke Friday night I will be honored to hold your hair up over the toilet.

  5. Most of mine come from childhood:

Karfone = Me! (To those of you that ain't in the know, my name is Katherine. It was how she pronounced my name. And of course, it stuck. I am now Aunty Karfone. Or is it Anty Karfone?)

And I don't know if this is something she still says, but it has become part of my vocab:
Joanne would say "Rock & Roll" for "leave" as in "Are you ready to leave?" Shannoh would say "Lock and Low" and I evolved/co-opted it to Lock and Load" It used to be, "Are you ready to lock and load?" Now it's just, "Lock and load?"

Finally: Imagine Baby Shannoh in her crib. I walk in and she's standing up, holding the railing. She says to me, "Mbaquanga" which is what my shirt says. At this time, she is neither walking nor talking and definitely not reading a random South African word for porridge/music. But I swear she said it.

    Happy Birthday, Shannoh!
    Love, Anty Karfone.

  9. There has never been anyone in my life that screamed "JAAACOOOB!" and then charged me at full speed for a jumping hug. Until the end of time I will always remember how cool that made me feel. Happy Birthday Shannon and I guess this means we can take you to Sabbat finally!

  11. Okay. The last comment reminded me:

When Shannoh was a toddler, she handed me a bra off the floor and said, "titties."

I, being the diligent auntie that I am, corrected her until she got it right. "No, it's 'hooters.' 'Hooters.' Can you you say that?"

    "Hootooze."

    Success.

    Love, Aunty Karfone.
